Immediate Cause of Revolt of 1857
Introduction of the Enfield rifle whose cartridges were greased with cow and pig fat. Sepoys had to bite off the cartridge top before loading. This offended both Hindu and Muslim sepoys. Mangal Pandey of the 34th Bengal Native Infantry at Barrackpore refused to use it and attacked British officers on 29 March 1857.
